Experience + Habit = Mental Model
A quick dive into how our daily habits and experiences shape the way we think and act — forming what’s called a mental model. Ever wondered why you do things on autopilot? Let’s talk about it.
So yeah, in my previous writing I talked about habit and experience, and came to a simple conclusion: the mix of habit and experience actually ties into our psychological drive and gets stored as memory. That thing... turns out it's called a mental model. Let’s talk a bit about that, shall we?
Mental model, based on what I read from the Advances in Psychology series, in simple words, is like the knowledge someone has about a specific domain especially habits they do in daily life. It’s also kind of a tool that helps bring out the knowledge we think we already know about something.
So like, when a habit turns into experience, subconsciously it becomes this kind of mental model that gets formed inside our psychology. Then, whenever we face a similar situation again, our subconscious just auto-responds and recalls the habit even if the situation is not 100% the same.
A simple example: let’s say we go shopping at olfomort or ondomort (you know what I mean) to buy instant noodles. When we enter the store, we usually look for the food section first, then from there we search for the instant food shelf. Even if the layout in olfo and ondo is different, our brain already kinda processed the "route" based on our habit: go to food section > find instant food. But if we don’t have that memory yet, like it's our first time in the store, we’d probably wander around, look here and there first load the scene, you know? Then, after that session of figuring things out, our subconscious saves it, and next time it becomes a faster process.
So yeah, that’s more or less the idea of a mental model how humans do something repeatedly until it becomes memory, and then that memory shapes actions that feel familiar.
Anyway, just sharing some thoughts. Sorry if it’s not perfect, and thanks for reading, appreciate it!
